چکیده

Discretization algorithms for solving semi-infinite minimax problems replace the original problem by an approximation involving the maximization over a finite number of functions and then solve the resulting approximate problem. The approximate problem gives rise to a discretization error and its solution results in an optimization error as a minimizer of that problem is rarely achievable with a finite computing budget. Accounting for both discretization and optimization errors, we determine the rate of convergence of discretization algorithms as a computing budget tends to infinity. We find that the rate of convergence depends on the class of optimization algorithms used to solve the approximate problem as well as the policy for selecting discretization level and number of optimization iterations. We construct optimal policies that achieve the best possible rate of convergence and find that under certain circumstances the better rate is obtained by inexpensive gradient methods.

Naval Postgraduate School Monterey , California Dissertation on Algorithms for Nonlinear Minimax and Min - Max - Min Problems and Their Efficiency

This dissertation approaches the solution of optimization models with uncertain parameters by considering the worst-case value of the uncertain parameters during optimization. We consider three problems resulting from this approach: a finite minimax problem (FMX), a semi-infinite minimax problem (SMX), and a semi-infinite minmax-min problem (MXM). In all problems, we consider nonlinear function...

Distributionally Robust Optimization with Matrix Moment Constraints: Lagrange Duality and Cutting Plane Methods1

A key step in solving minimax distributionally robust optimization (DRO) problems is to reformulate the inner maximization w.r.t. probability measure as a semiinfinite programming problem through Lagrange dual. Slater type conditions have been widely used for zero dual gap when the ambiguity set is defined through moments. In this paper, we investigate effective ways for verifying the Slater ty...

On Solving Large-Scale Finite Minimax Problems Using Exponential Smoothing

This paper focuses on finite minimax problems with many functions, and their solution by means of exponential smoothing. We conduct run-time complexity and rate of convergence analysis of smoothing algorithms and compare them with those of SQP algorithms. We find that smoothing algorithms may have only sublinear rate of convergence, but as shown by our complexity results, their slow rate of con...

An SQP Algorithm for Finely Discretized Continuous Minimax Problems and Other Minimax Problems with Many Objective Functions

A common strategy for achieving global convergence in the solution of semi-innnite programming (SIP) problems, and in particular of continuous minimax problems, is to (approximately) solve a sequence of discretized problems, with a progressively ner discretization meshes. Finely discretized minimax and SIP problems, as well as other problems with many more objec-tives/constraints than variables...

A truncated aggregate smoothing Newton method for minimax problems

Aggregate function is a useful smoothing function to the max-function of some smooth functions and has been used to solve minimax problems, linear and nonlinear programming, generalized complementarity problems, etc. The aggregate function is a single smooth but complicated function, its gradient and Hessian calculations are timeconsuming. In order to gain more efficient performance of aggregat...
